Race Equity Commission defers form work over liability review

Race Equity Commission · Meeting of September 3, 2026

Salem Race Equity Commission pauses discrimination reporting form work pending liability research. Chair Regina Zaragoza Frey reported that Assistant City Solicitor Omar Bennani identified potential liability issues related to monitoring and responding to form submissions. The commission agreed to defer changes pending research into how Cambridge and Arlington handle similar systems, with Human Resources Director Lisa Cammarata suggesting the city post information about filing complaints with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination as an interim measure.

The meeting also included a presentation from Shawn A. Newton, former Race Equity Task Force chair, on where the commission should focus its energy.
