Salem High School building committee presents $447 million project plan to neighborhood council

SALEM — Neighborhood Improvement Advisory Council heard detailed Salem High School building project presentation. Principal Glenn Burns, Building Committee Co-Chair Nate Bryant, and consultant Margaret Wood presented the design, funding approach, and 30-year repayment plan with Massachusetts School Building Authority share. Council members representing Point, South Salem, and Willows neighborhoods raised substantial concerns about affordability, impacts on low-income residents, and cost-comparison methodology with surrounding communities.
Mayor Dominick Pangallo responded that MSBA reimbursement is proportionally higher for lower-income districts, meaning Salem would bear a smaller share than more affluent communities.
