Conservation Commission approves seawall and climate adaptation projects

Conservation Commission · Meeting of May 19, 2026

Salem Conservation Commission advances coastal resilience agenda with unanimous approvals. The commission approved a 50-year climate adaptation plan for the House of the Seven Gables, which relocates structures out of flood zones and includes stormwater management features. Commissioners also unanimously issued an Order of Conditions for a seawall replacement at 37 March Street, an annual inspection requirement, and conditions on staircase access.

Negative determinations were issued for Brooks Street drainage rehabilitation and Collins Cove groundwater monitoring, while a proposed shed at 1 Parallel Street received approval conditioned on flood-mitigation measures. The commission continued the contested AvalonBay multifamily development and Bay View Avenue seawall project to June 16 pending further review.
