Salem Sets Flag-Raising Ceremonies for Ukrainian, Indian Heritage Months

SALEM — Mayor Dominick Pangallo announced the city will hold back-to-back flag-raising ceremonies next week honoring Ukrainian Independence Month and Indian Heritage Month, while Salem Public Library prepares to introduce the finalists for the city's next poet laureate at a public reading Aug. 20.

TOWN HALL

Pangallo and the city will hold a flag-raising ceremony marking Ukrainian Independence Month on Friday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at Riley Plaza, 1 Margin Street. The following day, Saturday, Aug. 22, at noon, the city will raise a flag at Salem City Hall, 93 Washington Street, in honor of Indian Heritage Month.

The city's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department released its September program of offerings this week, giving residents an early look at fall activities.

The American Red Cross held a blood drive in Salem on Friday, Aug. 14, as part of a broader appeal it says marks only the second national blood crisis the organization has declared in its history. The drive ran from noon to 5 p.m.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

Salem Public Library Director Tara Mansfield and Pangallo are inviting residents to meet the finalists for the city's next poet laureate at a public reading Thursday, Aug. 20, starting at 6 p.m. at Charlotte Forten Park, 289 Derby Street.

Separately, the city is planning a rededication and unveiling of President George Washington's Lansdowne Portrait on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m., with community members invited to attend.
