Salem Opens Relief Fund For Families Displaced By Putnam Street Fire

The City of Salem opened a relief fund Tuesday for residents permanently displaced by a fire that tore through a Putnam Street property on Aug. 15, and Mayor Dominick Pangallo separately announced plans to restore City Hall's historic entrance doors as part of the city's 400th-anniversary commemorations.

TOWN HALL

The city is collecting donations and rental leads to help residents who lost their homes in the Putnam Street fire begin rebuilding, according to a News Flash posted by Pangallo's office Tuesday. Salem Patch also reported on the relief effort in "Salem Launches Relief Fund For Putnam Street Fire Victims," noting that residents permanently displaced by the blaze can be supported through donations and rental leads (read it at https://patch.com/massachusetts/salem/salem-launches-relief-fund-putnam-street-fire-victims), a story the town's News Flash also covered today.

Separately, Pangallo announced the city will restore the grand wood entrance doors at Salem City Hall in celebration of Salem 400+, the quadricentennial commemorations running throughout 2026. Salem Patch reported the 1837 building's doors will come down for repairs and be returned by October, per its story "Salem To Restore Historic City Hall Doors As Part Of Salem 400+" (read it at https://patch.com/massachusetts/salem/salem-restore-historic-city-hall-doors-part-salem-400).

SCHOOLS

Salem Public Schools has relocated Wednesday's 5th Annual Back to School Fair from the area of the Sarah Parker Remond School to Collins Middle School because of nearby construction, the district announced Tuesday. The fair runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Salem Patch also flagged the site change, reporting that construction near the Remond school prompted the switch, in "Salem Back To School Fair Moves To Collins Middle School" (read it at https://patch.com/massachusetts/salem/salem-back-school-fair-moves-collins-middle-school).
