Council committee advances gas leaf blower ban to 2030
City Council · Meeting of August 6, 2026
SALEM — Council committee advances year-round gas leaf blower ban to 2030. The City Council Committee on Public Health, Safety and Environment voted 3-2 to recommend the prohibition, citing environmental and public health concerns from carbon emissions and noise. The committee consolidated originally staggered compliance dates into a single 2030 deadline for residents, commercial operators, and the city, and removed a blanket government exemption making municipalities subject to the ban.
Deputy Schaeublin of the Salem Fire Department detailed the department's need for gas-powered equipment to manage wildland brush fires, leading the committee to authorize temporary emergency exemptions issued by the fire department rather than broad waivers.
