Commission OKs demolitions for North River transit project

Historical Commission · Meeting of September 16, 2026

Salem Historical Commission clears three North River buildings for demolition. The commission unanimously found the buildings at 2 Commercial Street and 75 North Street not historically significant, clearing waivers for their demolition as part of a 60-unit mixed-use development in the North River Canal Corridor overlay district. The 38 Norman Street building, documented on a 1979 inventory form, was found historically significant but not preferably preserved, requiring photographs and dimensional plans prior to demolition.

The commission also approved gutter and downspout improvements at the House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association as part of a climate adaptation plan.
