SALEM — Zero Waste Salem planned fall events and heard a city composting ordinance is advancing through its first review stage. The committee confirmed the September 19 Book Swap moves to Hawthorne-Lake School, double the original venue's capacity, with the Longest Table set for September 12 and Waste Reduction Coordinator Alisa Cherkasova tabling at the Farmer's Market on September 24. City Council guest Lydia King reported the composting ordinance cleared its first review with mixed success but needs further editing; she also discussed longer-term waste-reduction strategies including compactors at a future DPW renovation, additional public trash and recycling bins, and cafeteria composting at all schools.
Chair Brian Romer announced he will step down in 2027.
