SALEM — Zero Waste Salem Committee welcomes new members and pauses July meetings. The committee unanimously approved its May minutes at the June 2 remote meeting and welcomed Keith Bettencourt and Victor Hernandez. Upcoming events include Swap'N'Drop recycling events on June 6 and 13, a Styrofoam collection on June 20, and the Living Green Expo on June 28.
Chair Brian Romer reported that a planned Materials Recovery Facility tour remains stalled, and Waste Reduction Coordinator Alisa Cherkasova flagged rising waste contamination rates at 9.5 percent, up from 7.5 percent last year. The committee meets next on August 4 with a planned potluck celebration instead of holding a July session.
