Salem Historical Commission tackles Winter Island hangar repairs and demolition waivers. The commission heard structural assessments of the 1934 Winter Island Coast Guard Hangar showing $3.17 million in needed repairs; Patricia Kelleher, Preservation Planner, said the city will address the most severe issues this year. Commissioners unanimously found the structure at 11 Summer Street historically significant and granted a demolition-delay waiver while preserving the two-story wood frame section.
At 395 Essex Street, the commission approved demolition of a Sears prefab garage to expand parking. Multiple applications were continued to July 1, including window reviews at 1 Broad Street Unit 11 and 6 Harrington Court.
