Tree Commission · Meeting of June 8, 2026

Salem Tree Commission debates new plantings versus maintaining mature downtown trees. Chair Darleen Melis raised concerns about London plane trees in severe decline on Washington Street, Riley Plaza, and near the Salem YMCA, arguing resources should shift toward preserving the existing canopy. Member Paul L'Heureux criticized contractor oversight of newly planted trees, noting poor maintenance at Palmer Cove Playground despite city investment.

DCR Forester David Bresnahan reported approximately 70 trees planted this spring through the Greening the Gateway Cities Program, mostly on private property and establishing well. The Commission approved prior meeting minutes 5-0-1, with one abstention.
