Tree Commission approves manual revisions, plans Earth Day publication

Tree Commission · Meeting of March 16, 2026

Salem Tree Commission updates Tree Manual with new planting guidance, schedules Earth Day publication. The commission voted 6-0 with one abstention to approve revisions adding new guidance on bark-covered roots and tree-planting technique, with publication scheduled for April 22. Tree Warden Kieran Kavanaugh reported staffing challenges with only one operator for the tree truck and two positions unfilled.

The DCR's Greening the Gateway Cities program planted 220 trees in Salem in 2025, bringing the total to 1,612 citywide, and the commission approved an Arbor Day event for April 24.
