Salem Transportation Commission approves resident permit criteria. The Transportation Commission voted unanimously 4-0 to adopt a two-step resident permit evaluation process requiring petitions to secure 80 percent household approval within a minimum one-city-block area, with filing barred September 1-October 31. Transportation Director David Kucharsky presented the framework after staff retrospectively evaluated recent applications, finding most had met most but not all new requirements.
The Commission also reviewed a revised pilot redesign for Brown Street/Washington Square North that would reduce two outbound turn lanes to one to enhance pedestrian safety, despite objections from Salem Witch Museum representatives concerned the bollards and barriers would compromise the area's aesthetic and photogenic qualities.
