School Committee names merged school Sarah Parker Remond Elementary

SALEM — School Committee names merged school Sarah Parker Remond Elementary, approves $5.8M capital plan. The committee voted to name the newly merged Saltonstall/Carlton Elementary School as Sarah Parker Remond Elementary School, honoring a Black educator and abolitionist expelled from Salem public schools in 1835 because of her race. Vice Chair Beth Anne Cornell led approval of the 2026-2027 school calendar contingent on moving a Professional Development half day from October 21 to October 30.

The committee also approved capital expenditure requests totaling $5.825 million for safety, accessibility, and modernization improvements, and approved 2026-2027 enrollment targets establishing 50 percent low-income and 50 percent non-low-income enrollment targets for schools with balanced enrollment.
