SALEM LIBRARY TRUSTEES REVISE CONDUCT CODE AMID SAFETY INCIDENTS

Board of Public Library Trustees · Meeting of April 23, 2026

Salem library trustees tighten patron conduct standards. The Board of Public Library Trustees unanimously approved a revised Patron Code of Conduct on April 23, 2026, addressing policy gaps dating to 2014. Library Director Tara Mansfield reported a rise in incidents following Lifebridge Day Center's reduced hours beginning April 13, including theft, intoxication, vandalism, and drug use indicated by a hypodermic needle found in a bathroom trash can.

Mansfield is implementing a proactive approach to connect people with available resources. The board also discussed support for suspending loans to municipalities with decertified libraries, pending possible decertification of Marblehead Abbot Library as of July 1, 2026.
