Salem City Council reaffirms commitment to immigrant protection

Salem City Council unanimously reaffirmed immigrant protections, adopting a 10-0-1 resolution that prohibits city coordination with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and restricts ICE access to municipal facilities without federal warrant. Councillor Lydia C. King introduced the measure, directing the City Clerk to urge state passage of the Safe Communities Act and the Protect Act.
The Council also designated East Budleigh, England, as sister city; appropriated $235,109.24 for Salem Skipper transit expansion and $43,245.14 for the May 5 special election; and approved $37,638.03 in retirement buybacks. A 60-day trial speed zone at 20 mph on Fort Avenue begins June 1.
