Salem Bike Committee discusses rail trail study, bikeshare negotiations

Salem partners on five-mile rail trail feasibility study with two towns. Peabody and Danvers will join Salem in examining an inactive freight line through the three communities; the scope will develop in spring with consultant RFP planned for summer. Senior Planner Tom Devine noted that federal earmark funding ties the study to trail use, though alternatives including passenger rail and freight service will also be reviewed.
Bikeshare ridership remains low after winter weather, and negotiations for a new operator contract may not conclude before April 1, risking temporary systemwide shutdown. The committee also discussed MassBike's Trail Etiquette Toolkit and considered adding signage along Salem trails.
