Public Art Commission reviews five semi-finalist proposals

SALEM — Public Art Commission reviews five semi-finalist designs from 400-plus competition. The commission heard presentations from Falcon Laina, Mark Favermann, Roark Congdon, Thomas Berger, and Nora Valdez and Jim Larson on designs ranging from a steel monument to the Salem Female Anti-Slavery Society to a community-sourced granite sculpture with incorporated footprints and handprints. Commissioners questioned the artists on materials, placement, and community engagement.
The commission approved January 27 meeting minutes 5-0 and nominated Becky Fisher as Vice Chair, with a vote set for March 10. Two proposed locations are within the floodplain and would require Conservation Commission approval. In other business, MOON Base One's occupancy capacity was reduced to 15 after a February 26 Building Department inspection, canceling upcoming events; Old Town Hall offered as alternative venue.
