Planning Board continues two major residential development hearings

Salem Planning Board advances major housing projects. The board unanimously continued two significant residential applications: WinnDevelopment's 145-unit adaptive reuse of Salem State University buildings at Forest River Residences, extended to June 25, and Beacon Communities Services' 48-unit veterans housing at the Tabernacle Congregational Church, continued to June 4. Chair Kirt Rieder expressed opposition to MassDOT's demand for tree removal on Route 1A for stormwater accommodation, calling the requirement a "travesty" with "dramatic impact." The board pressed WinnDevelopment on pedestrian connectivity improvements and the Beacon team on parking area compliance with zoning dimensional requirements.
