Historical Commission approves Seven Gables flood mitigation project

Historical Commission · Meeting of May 20, 2026

Salem Historical Commission approves House of the Seven Gables' flood and stormwater mitigation project. Vice Chair Kelly Tyler-Lewis presided, with Chair Vijay Joyce absent. The Commission voted 5-0, with one recusal, to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness for the multiphase project at 115 Derby Street.

The 50-year master plan will relocate the circa-1830 Counting House and flood-proof the 1687 Hooper Hathaway, designed per National Park Service Secretary of the Interior Guidelines for Flood Adaptation, with projected flood elevations through 2030.
