Salem Council on Aging Board votes to back affordable veteran housing at Tabernacle Church. Chair Lynda Coffill was unanimously authorized to write a letter of support for a Beacon Properties and Soldier On collaboration, expected to include 41 to 48 units with on-site social services, dining, and 24-hour staffing at the historic church property. Director Teresa Gove Arnold reported progress on Lee Fort Terrace housing applications for low-income seniors and families, and the board reviewed its workplan emphasizing continued advocacy for staff salary increases and kitchen redesign monitoring.
The board also confirmed Senior Day 2026 will be held at Winter Island on September 10th and discussed piloting a youth-led snow shoveling program modeled on Somerville's effort, with reduced rates for seniors.
