Council committee backs three senior tax relief initiatives

Salem council committee unanimously backs three senior tax relief initiatives for fiscal 2027. The Committee on Ordinances, Licenses and Legal Affairs recommended raising the elderly tax deferral income threshold to $75,000, creating an optional taxpayer fund for low-income seniors, and increasing the senior work-off program maximum from $1,500 to $2,000. City official Stephen Cortes reported six current deferral participants with $37,738.38 in combined deferrals.
All three items advance to full council with unanimous positive recommendations.
