Council committee advances proportional ranked choice voting

Salem Council committee unanimously backs ranked choice voting petition. The Government Services Committee, meeting jointly with the Committee of the Whole, voted 5-0 to adopt amendments and recommend advancing a Home Rule Petition with proportional ranked choice voting language. The revision was prepared by city solicitor Beth Rennard in consultation with elections expert Lauren Goldberg of KP Law.
Councilors King and Sydoriak championed the proportional approach, arguing it better preserves voter representation. Implementation would require state approval and citywide voter approval and could not take effect in municipal elections before 2029.
