Committee reviews bike master plan, pursues bikeshare expansion

SALEM — Bicycling committee plans bikeshare expansion and reviews master plan after eight years. The committee discussed reviewing its 2018 Bike Master Plan with focus on alignment with community values including safety, accessibility, and reducing car dependence. Senior Planner Tom Devine reported the city seeks MBTA approval for a Bluebikes station at the Commuter Rail property to replace one removed for Crescent Lot development.
The committee heard public concerns about e-bike battery storage restrictions in residential buildings and discussed advocacy for bike connections at Forest River Conservation Area during planned redevelopment. With regional grant funding, the city plans to add two to four additional bikeshare stations beyond the Commuter Rail replacement.
