Committee approves prior minutes, plans spring events

SALEM — Zero Waste Salem advances spring event planning and mission redraft. The committee, with nine members present, approved prior minutes unanimously and moved forward scheduling for a March 21 Book Swap, May 16 Repair Cafe, and June 6 Swap'N'Drop. The February Repair Cafe, rescheduled due to snow, completed 54 appointments with a 76 percent full-repair rate and high satisfaction ratings.
The committee will vote on its revised mission statement at the April 7 meeting. Waste Reduction Coordinator Alisa Cherkasova reported assisting Beverly with school composting. Guest Andy Varela presented a proposed ordinance requiring businesses generating over half a ton of weekly food waste to establish composting contracts through the health department.
