Commission approves Lafayette Street gas-meter upgrade from National Grid

Salem Historical Commission approves gas-meter replacements on Lafayette Street. The commission voted to approve National Grid's replacement of gas-meter services for properties with single risers only (249, 255, 265, 271, 303 Lafayette Street), but continued discussions about exterior-meter installations to April 15. The work replaces a nearly 150-year-old gas main and upgrades 27 existing services, of which 21 can be replaced in kind; six require larger pipes due to increased demand.
The commission also approved certificates of appropriateness for condensers and vents at 17 and one-half River Street and gutters and downspouts at 78 Federal Street, and deferred decisions on several other applications, including a solar-panel carport at 331 Essex Street and a demolition waiver at 33-37 Osborne Street.
