Commission approves Lafayette Street demolition waiver

Salem Historical Commission approves demolition for mixed-use development. In a 4-2 vote, the commission approved a waiver of the city's demolition delay ordinance for 73-75 and 83-87 Lafayette Street, reversing a 2022 denial. The project involves North Shore CDC and North Shore Community Health constructing a four-story facility with residential and health center components; architect Jonathan Evans presented design renderings showing modern brick textures and copper entry panels honoring the historic facade.
The project has already received Design Review Board and Structural Review Authority approval. Chair Vijay Joyce and Member Milo Martinez voted against the waiver, while Vice Chair Kelly Tyler-Lewis and Members Robert Peterson, Mark Meche, and Emily Gonzalez voted in favor.
