Salem City Council organizes for 2026, elects Merkl president. The Council convened in special session at the Peabody Essex Museum on January 5 to organize city government and elect a president. Councillor Andrew W.
Varela nominated Alice Rose Merkl for Council President, seconded by Councillor Erin Turowski. Merkl was elected by roll call vote of 10 yeas, 0 nays, and 1 present, with Merkl voting present. Councillor Kyle Alexander Davis moved to make the vote unanimous, which passed.
The Council also adopted the 2025 rules and regulations for 2026 and invited Mayor Dominick Pangallo to deliver his inaugural address, discussing Salem's planned investments ahead of its 400th anniversary.
